Russia starts building new generation nuclear reactor BREST

SEVERSK, Tomsk Region, Jun 8 (PRIME) -- Russian state nuclear power corporation Rosatom on Tuesday started construction of the world’s first new generation nuclear power unit BREST-OD-300.

The unit will operate a 300-megawatt (MW) prototype fast-neutron reactor with lead reactor coolants. The reactor will be safe, environmentally-friendly, resource-conserving, and competitive. The technologies used in construction of the reactor eliminate the accidents similar to the Chernobyl and Fukushima ones.

Besides the BREST reactor, Rosatom’s pilot project and a demonstration power plant will include a facility for production of mixed nitride uranium-plutonium fuel for reactors, and a facility for spent nuclear fuel reprocessing.

Rosatom wants to launch the plant in the second half of 2020s.
